Sino British AI Seminar 2025
The Sino-British Seminar on Empowering the Future with Intelligence: Reimagining the World, organised by SmallWorld and co-hosted by Shanghai Open University and the Xuhui District Education Bureau, was successfully held on September 17, 2025. The seminar focused on the philosophies and practices of future education in China and the United Kingdom. It aimed to establish a collaborative exchange platform for mutual learning, experience sharing, and ecosystem co-building through in-depth dialogue.

Wang Songhua - Vice President of Shanghai Open University
Topic: Opening Speech
In his opening speech, Wang Songhua highlighted the growing importance of AI as a catalyst for lifelong learning. His remarks set the tone for the seminar by underscoring education’s evolving role in preparing future-ready learners in an AI-driven world.

Zhou Gang - Deputy Secretary of the Education Working Committee of Xuhui District, Shanghai and Director of Xuhui District Education Bureau
Topic: Opening Speech
Zhou Gang's opening address reflected on the rapid progress of AI in education and its potential to shape the future of teaching and learning. He emphasised the importance of fostering collaboration between technology and educators, noting that innovation must always serve the broader goal of nurturing well-rounded students.
Topic: Reflections on the Construction of Xuhui District’s AI Experimental Zone
During his presentation, Zhou Gang provided insights into the practical implementation of artificial intelligence initiatives in Xuhui District, with a particular focus on AI’s role in classroom settings. He demonstrated how AI is being used to develop smart, interactive learning models that are driving the transformation of traditional teaching practices. While highlighting AI’s strengths in areas such as personalised tutoring, he emphasised that it cannot replace teachers’ emotional connection or their role in fostering creativity, underscoring the importance of AI–teacher collaboration.

Claire Giblin - Head of Denmark Road High School, United Kingdom
Topic: AI in Education: Case Studies From the UK and Across the World
Claire discussed how AI is being integrated into education globally, drawing on real-world case studies from the United Kingdom, Finland, and Kenya. She highlighted the benefits of AI, including reducing teacher workload and supporting personalised learning, while also addressing key challenges such as equity, infrastructure limitations, ethical considerations, and the need for strong teacher oversight and training to ensure AI enhances rather than replaces educators.

Olivia Raven - Assistant head of Aylesbury High School, United Kingdom
Topic: Your AI Co-Pilot Toolkit
Olivia’s session examined how educators can use AI as a collaborative partner to enhance learning, streamline administrative tasks, and foster creativity in the classroom. She focused on practical applications of AI across various aspects of education, from lesson planning to student assessment. By presenting real-world tools and strategies, Olivia highlighted how AI can be used responsibly by emphasising transparency, equity, and ethical practice, while addressing challenges such as over-reliance on technology, algorithmic bias, and the need to guide students in using AI critically and creatively.

Bai Qingchun - Associate research Fellow of Shanghai Open and Distance Education Technology Centre
Topic: Digital-Intelligent Learning Scenarios - New Momentum for Cultivating Students’ Innovative Thinking
Bai Qingchun’s presentation examined how to cultivate students’ innovative thinking in the era of large language models, with digitally enabled learning scenarios serving as a key driver. She emphasised that technological advancements have propelled education from large-scale standardisation toward greater intelligence and personalisation, and that fostering innovative thinking is both a timely response and a fundamental force for individual and societal progress.

Chen Yong - Principal of Shanghai Xinan Weiyu Middle School
Topic: From Curriculum to Classroom- Constructing an AI Education Ecosystem at Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Middle School
Chen Yong presented Shanghai Southwest Weiyu Secondary School’s (SSWSY) practices and achievements in developing an artificial intelligence education ecosystem built around three core dimensions: curriculum innovation, classroom transformation, and ecosystem co-construction. The school has implemented phased initiatives, each with distinct goals, themes, approaches, and outcomes, to support student development while also empowering teachers to integrate AI into their teaching through targeted training, focused professional development, and collaborative support structures.

Guo Yongjin - General Manager of Shanghai Education Software Development Co., Ltd.
Topic: AI Empowering Digital Teaching: Application Scenarios in Music and Geography Teaching Tools
Guo Yongjin discussed how AI serves as a supportive enabler for educators, helping advance basic education from digitisation toward intelligence. She emphasised AI’s ability to automate time-consuming routine tasks and proposed actionable strategies for responsible integration, including the development of subject-specific intelligent tools, the establishment of a multi-level “city–district–school” collaboration mechanism, and the creation of a unified data governance system. She highlighted that as AI becomes a collaborative partner, it can relieve educators of tedious work and allow them to focus on higher-value tasks.

Russel Ellicott - Principal of MISK Boys' Schools, Saudi Arabia
Topic: AI is the Teacher’s Co-Pilot, Not a Threat
Russel’s session examined how AI can function as a supportive partner for educators by streamlining routine tasks and enabling teachers to prioritise creativity, emotional intelligence, and student mentorship. He outlined key opportunities and challenges associated with classroom AI integration and presented practical strategies for its responsible use. Framing AI as a “co-pilot,” Russel demonstrated how it can enhance personalised instruction, strengthen teacher–student relationships, and contribute to a more engaging learning environment.

Jia Wei - Deputy Party Secretary and President of Shanghai Open University
Topic: Closing Remarks
In his closing remarks, Jia Wei engaged the audience in an interactive activity, presenting a video and inviting participants to distinguish between real and AI-generated content. The exercise underscored both the power and sophistication of emerging AI technologies while raising awareness of the ethical and practical challenges they pose. He concluded by emphasising the importance of responsible AI use, encouraging educators and innovators to harness its potential thoughtfully while remaining vigilant about its broader implications.

Our founder, Dan Corry (far right), personally reached out to the British experts and invited them to participate in the seminar, where they shared their expertise on the role of artificial intelligence in education.

The seminar manual included a contents page, seminar information, the event agenda, profiles of distinguished Chinese and UK guests, and dedicated note pages. It served as a comprehensive guide to help attendees understand the seminar’s context, programme flow, and speaker backgrounds.
